What makes Cacao special?
We are a small batch of real people. No big batch, factory baking. No stock frozen cakes hoping to be purchased. Just what our hands can manage to make fresh each day. Our talented baker’s and counter managers are here serving you a side of real customer service. Our favorite is when you stop in so we can learn your name and favorite treats. We like to take the occasional hour for a staff birthday lunch (we take meals seriously!), or a trip to the orchard to pick apples for your treats.
We accept limited specialty orders per day, so the sooner you place your order the better, however, our minimum notice is 48 hours. Upon order placement, we do not accept cancellations or quantity deductions. Prepaid items will not be held past pick up time indicated. Refunds, exchanges, or credits will not be issued for any reason.
How do I keep my baked items fresh?
We recommend keeping all of your freshly baked items airtight to preserve freshness. Just as you would with your homemade items, utilize that stack of Tupperware and even go a step further by plastic wrapping the container. All of our items should last 2-3 days minimum sitting on your counter if kept airtight. Almost all of our items freeze super well, including our bread! If you do not plan to finish off that slice of cake, reserve some for the freezer by placing into an airtight container and plastic wrapping 3 times. This will help avoid freezer burn and that weird freezer “taste”. Pull your items out of the freezer the night before, or the morning of to defrost on the counter. For best results with your bread: once defrosted, place in a 350 degree oven for 5-10 minutes to toast the crust! Enjoy!
What is your shipping policy, schedule and carrier?
Freshly baked items and chocolate can be precarious treats to send by mail, but we have done our best to create a shipping policy that delivers your order in optimal condition and at the best freight rate possible. During the warm weather period, there may be some items that we do not ship (chocolate items, especially!).
We ship FedEx Ground or 2-Day, whichever rate is best, with a 2-3 day transit time. A tracking number will be sent to you upon shipment. After you have placed your order on our website, you will be prompted to confirm the shipping total which is calculated based on your order total. Shipping costs are added to your order total at the time of payment.
To avoid transit over the weekend, which puts the quality of your order at risk, we ship on Tuesday and Wednesday only. Orders received on Wednesdays after 12:00 PM CST will ship out the following week. Depending on the order, your order will ship within one to three business days of receipt. In general, we reserve the right to ship your order for the most convenient arrival. If you require a specific delivery date, please contact ASAP to coordinate the best route possible. Please note: once an order has been delivered we cannot be responsible for damage or theft due to an unattended package. We are also not responsible for packages delayed due to natural causes (e.g. bad weather) or packages returned as ‘undeliverable’ due to incorrect address information provided to us.
Do you ship all over the world?
Yes, we ship to all 50 states as well as internationally. Domestic orders can be placed directly online. To place an international order, please call us at 847.233.2253 so that we can accommodate your needs. Shipping costs and policies may vary by destination country. We require your order details to ensure your treats get there as safely and quickly as possible.
Can I ship my order to multiple addresses?
Yes. If you are ordering online, each destination must be placed as a separate order. If you have a large order with multiple addresses please contact us at 847.223.2253(CAKE) and we would be happy to assist you.
What if I already placed an order but I need to cancel it?
To change, cancel or request a return for your order, please contact us promptly at 847.223.2253(CAKE). There will be no refund available after the treats have been boxed for shipping. What kind of ingredients go into your sweets?
Cacao takes its ingredient lists very seriously. Our mission is to use 100% natural, almost always organic, local ingredients. We use pure and clean, non-GMO, ingredients that are recognizable and likely found in your local gourmet grocery store. We do this for numerous reasons, but most importantly, because it makes for the most delicious result.
Where do the ingredients you use come from?
Many of the ingredients we use are sourced from within Illinois and Southern Wisconsin, like organic dairy & eggs, honey as well as local seasonal fruits. We like to purchase from local companies that do what they do best. At the end of the day, we always look for the best ingredients to create a quality product that you have come to expect from us. We are fortunate that in many cases it happens to be right in our own backyard. We spend a lot of time scrutinizing each ingredient, depending on how we are using it, to find the one that best works for the sweet we are aiming to create. Some of our favorites are King Arthur Organic Flour, Tempel Farms Organics Eggs (Old Mill Creek), Honey Works Honey (Grayslake), Radical Root Farm Eggs + Produce (Libertyville), Kilgus Farmstead Dairy (Fairbury, IL), and so many more!
Can I take professional photos in your shop?
Cacao offers photographers a flat rate of $40 to photograph in the bakery with a time limit of 30 minutes, with a complimentary cupcake for each member of the family! Each additional 30 minutes is $25 dollars. Please call us to schedule a time.
Do you offer wedding and party favors?

Do you wholesale your sweets for retail stores?

How do I know what allergens are in your treats?
We do not specialize in allergen free items. Our kitchen uses tree nuts, dairy, eggs and gluten on a daily basis. If you have severe allergies, we recommend you proceed on the side of caution and not consume our sweets.
Where are your baked goods made?
We bake all of our items right here in our brick and mortar shop located at 122 Center Street in Grayslake, Illinois.
Do you rent your bakery out for parties, meetings and workshops?
Yes, we do rent out our space for meetings and workshops and showers and parties of all kinds! The entire bakery space can be reserved on Saturday or Sunday for private parties. Please see our room rental page or our workshop page for details, pricing and information on reserving our space.
What days do you bake fresh bread?
We offer freshly baked breads every day! Please see our bread schedule at the bottom of our home page for the days and types of breads we offer. Or be like the cool kids and pre-order in the Fresh Bread section of our shop!
Do you have the same items in your bakery case on a daily basis?
In some cases, yes. We bake the classics (chocolate chip cookies, vanilla and chocolate cupcakes, etc) every day. However, we also like to keep your sweet tooth excited, with unique offerings daily as well as layer cake slices, and a variety of different bars and cookies.
What are Tipsy Cupcakes?
Glad you asked! These are our claim to fame, the original beer and alcohol infused cupcakes! We bake the cupcakes with your favorite beers, champagnes and liquors, topped with a complementing buttercream. These are truly a special treat!
Do you have a pantry/gift section in your shop? How can I sell to you?
We do have a pantry/gift section in our shop! As with our baked goods, we strive to provide organic or all natural items in our retail section. We sell our homemade and award winning caramel sauce and dark chocolate hot fudge sauce. We also sell a variety of other natural food items, dish towels and greeting cards. We love supporting our community and take that responsibility seriously! First and foremost, we always try to support organizations in need, or providing resources directly to the Grayslake community.
